This is an exceptional knife for those looking for an introduction to fine Japanese knives. It is extremely sharp out of the box, although the combination of VG-10 steel and the hammered Damascus finish (VERY ATTRACTIVE) might make it a little harder to maintain and sharpen. Much sharper than the typical high end western knife like Henckels and Wusthof (and I am a big fan and owner of those brands). Profile is a bit flatter than the German knives, but is still very comfortable for a variety of cutting techniques. 7" is a bit shorter than most chef's knives, but if you have smaller hands, or like me a somewhat more constrained prep environment in your kitchen, the size is ideal. You will only notice the shorter length if using to carve or cut very large vegetables.
