Product Description

The Nostalgia Electrics CCP510 Vintage Collection 53" Old Fashioned Movie Time Popcorn Cart will be the hit of every party as the 6-ounce kettle pops up to 16 cups of hot, fresh, kettle cooked popcorn per batch. Providing a vintage look and feel, reminiscent of silent movie houses and carnivals of the early 1900s, the cart is designed for both home and commercial use. It features a large, stainless steel kettle with built-in stirring system and a kernel catcher to keep unpopped kernels out of each perfectly popped batch. A compartment in the base of the unit is available to store supplies, making it easy to keep the cart well stocked and organized. An easy-to-clean design and accessible height makes serving a snap.

Nostalgia Electrics CCP510 Vintage Collection 53" Old Fashioned Movie Time Popcorn Cart Review

Most popcorn makers of the 4 oz. kettle size and up are much more expensive than this model manufactured for the Helman Group (aka Nostalgia Electrics). Consequently, I would say that it is a good value ---- but that's not to say it doesn't have its flaws. Unlike many of its more expensive competitors, this model carries a commercial rating, but that doesn't translate into a bulletproof appliance that your kids can knock around without denting or damaging it (or worse, burning themselves on the hot kettle). The storage shelf built into the stand is covered by a metal door with rather fragile looking hinges, and the plexiglass panel that provides access to the hopper ought to be framed in metal to keep it from flexing flimsily. Fortunately, though the metal housing is rather thin, we noticed no major dents or flaws in the paint job. Nevertheless, even with gentle use the wheel cover nut came off after one week and we can't get Helman Group to return phone calls. Their customer service line is either busy or routes to an answering machine. This lends a very unprofessional impression, to say the least. In this respect, I have to dock it a star. There's only a 90-day warranty and no real support to back it. The manufacturer had better hope that nobody calls their state attorney general's office. In any event, when paying more than $200, an extended warranty isn't a bad idea whether it's a piece of fitness equipment or a novelty appliance.

The key to using this popper with success is to use FRESH POPCORN KERNELS in combination with the CORRECT MEASUREMENTS. Fresh doesn't necessarily mean the kernels at your grocery store that you purchased last week. Who knows how long they sat there while the average customer bypassed them for the microwave variety? Case-in-point: We had some gourmet popcorn left over from a gift set a year or so back and it popped great, whereas the "new" bag of popcorn kernels didn't pop well at all. So when there are complaints on Internet reviews about too many kernels left unpopped, it could be a bad heating element but more likely stale popcorn kernels are to blame. I have no idea if this explains it, but most corn is genetically modified by splicing genes of unrelated plants and animals to create disease resistant, higher yield crops (aka "frankenfood"). It could be that much of the so-called popcorn kernels sold today are inferior for popping because they are no longer natural. Try switching to organic, non-GMO and/or another brand and you will be pleased with the results.

Commercial popcorn rental units have a technique not mentioned in the user manual that ships with the CPP510. After pre-heating the kettle by flipping on the switch for 3 minutes add in the oil and THREE kernels. If all three pop, add the remainder to the kettle. Secondly, when popping, never use more than a half cup (level, not heaping). This is key if you don't want the mechanism that stirs the corn to jam. Same goes for oil and seasoning. For this reason there are tools included for accurate measurements. And lastly, that handy light bulb in the top looks cool but unless you pop multiple back-to-back batches to fill the hopper, it's just too far removed from the bottom of the hopper to keep the popcorn piping hot (a batch, incidentally, is about 8-10 cups of popped corn). The warming light is better than nothing, though. (And since it is an ordinary light bulb, no costly or exotic lighting replacements are in store.)

As stated before, this unit is not a toy. It looks nice but the sheet metal is very sharp inside and it is easy to cut yourself while cleaning the unit ---- speaking from firsthand experience, I might add. In addition, it is up to the user to time the popping. Once the corn pops more slowly it is vitally important to shut off the heat to the kettle so that the warming element will not burn out prematurely. Generally, it takes only 3-5 minutes to warm the kettle. Once the ingredients are added it generally takes another 3 minutes or so to pop the contents. There is no need to wait for a cool-down time between batches. (Just be careful when refilling the kettle to turn off the heating element first and to wear gloves to prevent burns.)

When turning the handle to dump the popcorn into the hopper be careful not to hit the mechanism too hard. The kettle's motor assembly is held to the underside of the metal roof by a plastic bracket. Moreover, giving it a hard swing from side to side may damage the gear alignment. In fact, the trickiest part about using the popper is getting the kettle seated properly. At a height of 4'11, this task requires either a chair or a lot of awkward bending/reaching. The user manual warns that if the popper jams or doesn't operate correctly, it could be a result of misaligned gears due to failing to seat the kettle properly.

The instructions don't give any advice on seasoning. Because of that, it requires a bit of experimentation to obtain the desired flavor. If you want the artery clogging variety traditionally served in theaters, use coconut oil with butter flavoring. If you prefer your popcorn a bit healthier, the good news is that this is entirely doable because just about any oil can be used to pop corn. We prefer popping oil that is unsaturated, non-hydrogenated and trans-fat free. To that we add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Flavacol butter flavored salt manufactured by Gold Medal. The result is popcorn flavor that no microwave or air popper can approach -- and not the least bit greasy, either (thanks to the fact that the popper only requires 1 tablespoon of oil and distributes it evenly). For the latter, our preference is Orville Redenbacher Popping & Topping Oil.

The instructions don't give much advice on cleaning except to say that the kettle is supposed to become "seasoned" as a result of normal use. After reading reviews in which people complain that after a year or so of use their stirring mechanism begins to jam, I can't help but wonder if this is due to an excessive buildup of this so-called seasoning. Since none of the parts are dishwasher safe and cannot be immersed in water, an excessively dirty kettle just might be an explanation. Thankfully, there are concession supply websites that offer popcorn kettle cleaners. Because we haven't been using our popper for long, our approach thus far is to simply to wipe the interior down with a mixture of water and vinegar. (But don't use anything but a damp cloth on the painted surfaces!)

The assembly instructions aren't the best, but our box shipped complete with no missing parts. It took about 40 minutes to assemble using the included diagram/instructions. Assembly tools are included but for a Phillips screwdriver.

Bottom line? This popcorn machine does what it claims to do. It fills the air with the smell of popcorn in a way no microwave popcorn can. It produces tastier results than any other popper we have used. What's not to love?

Garrett Pro-Pointer Metal Detector Includes Woven Belt Holster and 9 Volt Battery Review

I am relatively new to metal detecting (and I hardly ever review products), but after several days of digging holes in heavy, often filled with rocks and roots, soil in Ohio and trying to find whatever the heck my metal detector (Garrett Ace 350) had detected, I was quickly losing patience. My metal detector has a pinpoint feature like many modern detectors, but even so, it can be tricky to locate an item. Just because it is displaying as a dime or quarter 4 inches down, does not mean it can't be a larger hunk of metal 8 inches down. Pretty soon I have a huge, deep crater but still not whatever the detector had found. This would leave me wondering if I was somehow off on using the detector's pinpoint feature and the object was a little off to the side, etc., etc. You get the picture.

Anyways, after several days of this (either not finding an item or taking a while to find the item) I was sold on the idea of a stand-alone handheld pinpointer. After some research, I decided upon the Garrett Pro-Pointer because it a.) looked robust, b.) was not connected to the detector itself like an inline pinpointer (I know some like those, but I just wanted something like a wand that wasnt connected with wires to anything), and c.) was water resistant.

Well, I used this (the Garrett Pro-pointer) all day two days ago and for about an hour last night at dusk (low light) (yes, the little LED light was useful (!) since I hadn't brought a flashlight) and I have to say that it really spoils you. The battery gave out (it was the heavy duty (not alkaline) 9 volt that came with the unit) near the end of the marathon detecting session two days ago (the first day I used it) and I would have called it a day had I not thought to bring a spare 9 volt. (BTW, mentioned that it was the cheap battery that comes with the unit that gave out after about 7 hours because it is supposed to last longer than that -- I imagine it will on the new alkaline battery I put in) (Even if it doesn't, I still love it!).

Anyway, like I was saying, I would have called it a day without a functioning Pro-pointer. It makes finding the objects VERY much easier, which equates to having more fun and finding more things. The ONLY terrain on which I would consider detecting without the Pro-pointer (but since I own one now, I wouldn't) would be a sandy beach if I had a perforated scoop tool. So, it the only place you go detecting is a nice sandy beach (I am jealous), then you could maybe get by with a scoop. That said, considering how affordable the Pro-pointer is I would still recommend investing in it.

As far as operation of the unit goes, it is just like in the video on the Garrett website. You can scan around with the 360 degree field around the length of the pointer then use the tip to zone in on the object. The beeping gets faster and faster until you are touching or almost touching the object, at which point the beeping changes to a continuous tone. Ease of use is very natural. I found things in AT LEAST, I would estimate, a fourth or fifth of the time it would have taken me without the Pro-pointer (frankly, probably even less than that). Plus, if you don't find it right away, you know you are digging in the right direction when you do need to dig a little more than originally intended, which is comforting to know. Found lots of coins and a 1947 dime (silver!) which is in great condition and probably would have stood a greater chance of being scratched had I not known exactly where it was thanks to the pointer. Also, it is a solidly built and well-sealed unit that can stand up to getting dirty and wet without any problems (so far, at least).

Well, I hardly ever review things, and if I do, it means I feel very strongly about them. I can't say enough good things about the Garrett Pro-pointer. I researched others and this seems like the best for my needs in any price range and so far I absolutely love it!

  • 4 feeding ports can be easily accessed via the perch ring; internal baffle
  • Squirrel-triggered motor spins the feeder to quickly remove squirrels
  • Clear UV-stabilized polycarbonate feeder; 5-pound capacity; heavy metal cap
  • Measures 8.5 x 8.5 x 28.5 inches; limited lifetime warranty; 1-year electronics warranty

Product Description

The Yankee Flipper comes with a motor-driven, battery-powered, weight-activated perch ring that expels squirrels when they try to get at the bird seed. When a squirrel steps on the perch, a connection is made with a motor that makes the perch spin, and the squirrel is flipped off the feeder. The unit comes equipped with a rechargeable nickel-cadmium power stick battery and a battery charger that plugs into standard 120 volt wall outlets. Sturdy stainless steel wire hanger will not rust. 21" long tubular feeder with 5 lb seed capacity. Metal cap fits snugly so that squirrels cannot pry it off. 4-1/2" diameter seed tube is made of UV stabilized polycarbonate for durability. Tube is long enough so that squirrels can't hang down from the top and reach seed. Interior is properly baffled to direct seed to the seed ports. Four seed ports are positioned around the tube. Metal parts have a forest green finish.

Droll Yankees YF Flipper 4-Port Hanging Bird Feeder Review

I have been battling the squirrels with limited success for years. Either the feeders didn't stop the squirrels at all or they were so dang ugly I didn't want them in my yard. The squirrels even ate a few of the "squirrel proof" feeder I tried. I'm pretty cheap, but the Droll Yankee Co. seems to have a good reputation so I wasn't too reluctant to part with the bucks for this feeder. My first impression was that it is a lot larger than I expected and seemed to be sturdier than most feeders. I plugged it in and let it charge overnight (it charges like a power screwdriver), filled it with black-oil sunflower and hung it in my favorite bird feeder tree the next morning. My Carolina-chickadees and Cardinals were feeding within thirty minutes, Mr.Squirrel made his first attempt after about an hour. There is really no way I can describe what followed. Let's just say I have some really freaked out squirrels around my house.I have had the feeder up for over a month, the squirrels have been forced to feed from the spilled seed on the ground and the feeder is still operating from the original charge. This feeder is is worth every penny and then some. I wish I could give it more than five stars. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkComment Comments (4)

Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder Review

This was my husband's "BIG" gift for the holiday (2010), and he hasn't liked a gift this much in a very long time! He likes to think he is a coffee buff, but never had a burr coffee grinder before, and after comparing model after model, name brand after name brand, I chose the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder for his gift.

We used to have a nice $50 Cuisinart grinder for years, and it still works well, but the noise it produced was horrifying (and I am NOT exaggerating, the NEIGHBORS even knew we were up when they heard the grinder, we live in a 2 story single family home), and the coffee grounds my husband left all around the machine when he removed the grounds bin was a daily annoyance. That coffee grinder has been cleaned & now happily residing at his office, where they can enjoy the mess and the noise, and a pretty good cup of coffee.

Now you wouldn't think that switching grinders would have an overall impact in the coffee quality, but did it ever! The coffee tastes so much richer, fuller and more aromatic than before! Even our 23 year old son said "Wow mom, this coffee is good, did you switch beans?" Was he surprised to find out all we did was switch grinders!

NOISE: Minimal, I can't even hear it when I'm sleeping. Our old grinder running used to be my wake up call upstairs, on the second floor, in the opposite corner of the house! The Breville's noise is semi~pleasant, like another reviewer stated, and not annoying at all, almost comforting. Happily, the noise just stays in the kitchen now, so only the smell of great coffee wakes me up on the opposite end of the house, YUM!

MESS: Zip, ziltch, nada. I am very pleased that the coffee grounds are housed safely & neatly in the attractive container. No issues with grind mess everywhere.

COST: OK.. can't find it anywhere below $199. I compared a lot of models out there, the two I ALMOST went with were the Kitchenaid $160~ish dollar model (Kitchenaid reviews weren't as good, and there was mention all over the internet about bulk and footprint of the machine), and the cheaper Breville around $95 or so, but the grindings all over the place by a couple of reviewers was enough to turn me off of that model. I opted for spending a more, and got a great machine my husband absolutely loves.

SIZE: Smaller than I thought it was going to be, packs a big BIG tower of conical burrs for massive grinding power. Just takes up the same small footprint of our old Cuisinart model, but a bit taller, so no issues there.

LOOKS: Stylish and elegant. It looks like a sophisticated appliance that can take a lot of wear & built to last. We display it proudly next to our old faithful "BUNN" coffee maker.

QUALITY: No flimsy hardware here, it all performs & appears like it will last for years. Backlit display seems very durable as well, and is very nice to aide pinpointing the perfect grind. The conical burrs are super sharp, super tough, and plentiful. My husband was impressed.

CLEANUP: Not difficult. They provide a nice brush that does a good job, esp since we enjoy a dark french roast with some beans being quite oily. Have to clean it more often with those types of beans anyway. No issues here.

GRIND CHOICES: OK.. WOW is all I can say. The description says it all, pick your grind, pick the strength, pick the amounts, whatever. Tons of ways to tweak the grind out to your liking.

HOPPER: (Amended 1/5/2011) Know now, that this hopper is NOT completely 100% AIRTIGHT. Our old Cuisinart hopper lid was very loose, just sat there and if bumped could fall off, but Breville's hopper lid is tight, and holds a whole 1 pound bag of beans with ease. No need to constantly refill! As per a commentor's statement, this is NOT airtight, and they were disappointed. It has a tight lid on top, but the bottom I did not take into consideration (as the bottom of the hopper is open to the bur wheels and exit, thus not 100% airtight. Even though it can hold up to 1 pound of beans, the guide states it does not recommend storing the beans in the hopper. I must mention that since we've been using this for over a year now, & we go through a full hopper of beans about every 4 - 5 days, we've detected no loss in coffee quality as per our tastes. Even though we keep the beans in the hopper, and we use it 1 - 2 times per day, the coffee still tastes phenomenal in our opinion, from day #1 to day #5. I also agree that finding a completely sealed air tight bean storage on a grinder will probably be next to impossible to find.

There are a lot of other attachments & things to do with this, but I hit the highlights for what we use it for. Our morning cup of YUM, and boy did this ever deliver.

CONS: Haven't found any yet, other than the $199 cost. Only time will tell if this machine is as durable as we think it can be. But since it only had a few reviews, and I always go to Amazon first, I needed to write this to add it to the happy family of 5 star ratings for this grinder.

Hopefully, this will be the last grinder we will ever need for quite a L O N G time. We are amazed at everything about this machine & the coffee it makes.

Thanks Amazon members for putting the reviews out there, this helped us make a great decision.

UPDATE: (03/20/2012): I must also state that finding a similar priced grinder that matches this one, (in finished grind, features, performance and taste of the coffee), will be difficult to duplicate. We have had no disappointments in regards to this grinder.
