The PowerDrive Transmission delivers more power from the motor to the cutting string so you can get the job done faster and the Automatic Feed Spool ensures continuous work without bumping and having to stop to adjust the spool. The trimmer easily converts to an edger with a turn of the shaft. Includes one battery and a Fast Charger (about 1 hour), spool, guard and Auxiliary Handle.Black & Decker LST136 13-Inch 36-Volt Lithium Ion Cordless High Performance String Trimmer Review
I've had a corded Toro trimmer for the last 6 years or so. Initially it had one of those bump and grind line feeding thingies which drove me stark raving mad so I replaced it with this grass gator thingamajig which took pre-cut lengths of thicker, green-twizzler looking line. It worked great. I bought a huge spool of the line and cut it myself and have not had to buy line again in all those years.Now... this could partly be because I hate trimming so much that I don't do it as often as I should. I tend to do it when things really look bad, or when company is coming. While the trimmer itself works great, lugging all that cord around, switching outlets, having it come unplugged randomly, having to wind it all back up again in the end... drives me crazy.
I keep thinking about a gas powered trimmer - but the maintenance scares me. Reviews of the cordless electrics have tended to be hit or miss. But we have had a 36v B&D cordless lawnmower for a few years now and I am very happy with it so since this new version of the 36v cordless trimmer came out I thought I would give it a go.
I just used it for the first time and am very happy. It doesn't feel like it has quite the oomph of my Toro, due to the single thin line vs. the dual twizzler line, I think - but it whacked through everything I needed it to. Things were pretty bad this first time out as I've been neglecting to trim for weeks - have mowed the grass 4 times or so this season but not trimmed at all. So I am going to have to wait for stuff to kind of dry up and blow away to see what I missed and give it another go. I tried to keep it no more than 3 or 4 power while using it, though. You can adjust a dial from 1 to 6, the higher it is the more power you give it - which means you drain the battery faster. According to my husband using it on the max setting a lot will shorten the overall battery life - so while I try it out and make sure I like it I want to be sure it does the trick without having to kick it to max power. I had it on 2 or 3 for a good portion of the time and was able to get through everything I needed without cranking it to 6 - though I did have to spend a little time on the thicker stuff.
It has a safety trigger which is a good thing - you need to push in the little button, then the big button. Works well. (I whacked my ankle last summer so I appreciate this! One of those fluke things)
I think my biggest concern is how fast will this blow through line. Since it feeds automatically, you don't really have a feel for how much line you are using. It will take a few uses to figure out how much line it eats. I can say the autofeed feature seems to work just fine. I was scared of having to use the bump and grind method again - I was really torn between giving up the grass gator and not having to drag a cord. I'm glad this has the auto-feed feature. It's WONDERFUL not to drag a cord. I can whack everything - anywhere in the yard - and then go back and get spots I missed - without it being an ordeal. I hate it when I realize I missed a spot AFTER I put the cord away. With this it will be no biggie at all to just go and get that spot.
We have a 10,900sf lot with a garage all the way in back of the property - so I have a long driveway to trim, some planter boxes in front to trim around, swing set to trim around, mail box half whiskey barrel to trim around, fence around back yard to trim - fair bit of trimming. Battery was still going when I finished. We ordered ours online from a big orange store and right now there is an online promotion to get a free 2nd battery - price is still lower than here as of this review -I did not need a 2nd battery though. Might be nice to have at some point, who knows.
Now I am dreaming of the 36v cordless leaf blower coming out as blowing away the evidence of my work is another task I tend to put off because of the stupid cord.
Very very very happy with this. Can't say how it compares to gas as I have never used gas. Lacks a little of the oomph of my corded, because of the grass gator replacement head, but it does what I need it to and the freedom of no cord is... heaven. Our yard is gonna look a lot better this summer. Our neighbors should be pleased. :-)
updating to say I have taken it for a second run and it worked even better, due to no over growth. I think it takes me about as much time to do my entire property with this as it did just to unwind and rewind the stupid mile of cord on my old trimmer. Bummed to find out the cordless blower won't be out till next year - I was thinking this would be the best summer ever, as far as yard work. Come on, B&D!!!
Updating - the blower blows. :-( No cord free summer for me. Still happy with the trimmer.
Am now on my second grass cutting season with this and still loving it. Battery still working just fine.
