Mr. Heater MH18B, Portable Propane Heater Review

I was concerned when I purchased this unit. There are a number of highly negative reviews on it. However, on further research, I have discovered that the circumstances leading to those reviews could have been avoided.

When one uses this heater with a 20 lb propane bottle & accessory hose, it is imperative that you always shut the tank off first & let the heater run until it burns off all the fuel in the lines.

*** IT IS IMPERATIVE TO FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE ***

If one simply turns the heater knob to the off position, it will trap trap 100 PSI of propane in the accessory hose. When high pressure propane sits in the rubber hose, it will chemically react with the rubber and leetch a light oil. The oil will build up and quickly work its way into the heater, clogging both the regulator & control valve.

Another very important recommendation is to purchase the gas line filter. This will catch the oily residue and protect the combustion components of the heater should one forget to follow the precautions above.

Keeping these precautions in mind, one will be able to enjoy a very well-build and flexible-use portable heater.

Hitachi RB24EAP 23.9cc 2 Stroke 170 MPH Gas Powered Handheld Blower (CARB Compliant) Review

This is a quality machine - and is the same as the Tanaka, a brand used by many pro gardeners and landscape maintenance persons. I've had McCulloch, Ryobi and a Sears Craftsman (that I returned after the first use). This machine is lighter, runs much quieter, and has quite a bit more power than any of the others. It isn't really in the same league. This one runs flawlessly, has a ton of power, and a quality feel.

Be aware of the mph ratings on some of these yard blowers. They get those ratings by including a worthless little tiny nozzle. That's how the Craftsman got its impressive ratings. But the thing had very poor real-world performance. This Hitachi doesn't come with gimmicky nozzles. You get ONE nozzle, that you always leave on, and that one works very well. For normal yard cleanup where you can't justify one of the expensive backpack units, this one has plenty of grunt.

I originally wanted a blower-vac. No longer. The vac units all get mediocre reviews at best. The Sears blower I had for week was a poor performer, and the vac feature was useless. If you're like me and think you need the vac, re-think it. You probably don't need that worthless feature, and besides, it is a pain on most of these to convert from blower to vacuum. I suggest that you will be much happier with a quality blower-only.

Some of the newer machines have a trigger lock so that you don't always have to hold the trigger. Unless you have a huge yard and are going to use the blower for an hour nonstop, that's another feature that you don't need. In this case it would be nice to have, but don't base your buying decision on it.

I think this one is a great choice. It's not too much money - actually about $25 less money than the Echo at the local home improvement store, has a 7 year consumer warranty, starts easy hot or cold, and really moves some air.

Signature Sleep Essential 6-Inch Twin Mattress, White Review

First of all, I've never seen a mattress that was this price before except at IKEA which was the absolute worst most terrible horrible no-good very bad mattress that I despised with a passion and I have since burned it (thrown it out). This mattress is not even in the same category, it's pretty wonderful for the price and very comfortable in general.

I must admit that I didn't buy this mattress for myself but rather for my guest bedroom since I just needed something and the price was right. I was debating whether to spend an additional $50 for an 8" mattress but after some hesitation decided to buy the cheaper mattress and spend the $50 on shoes. When it arrived it was very easy to get set up; if you've never unwrapped a mattress that's rolled up before you should know a few things:
1. Have the bed frame ready and put the plastic-covered mattress on the box spring or slats.
2. Slowly cut the plastic with strong scissors or a sharp knife. Keep in mind that it's normal once the plastic has been torn the slightest, the mattress will start to expand to its flat state.
3. Once the mattress is flat, cut the plastic that is keeping the mattress vacuum-packed and watch it SWOOSH inflate.
4. If you're unsure about anything, search for "unwrapping mattress" on youtube and get acquainted with the process.

Every rolled up mattress comes with a warning that it takes 48 hours to expand to its full size but this mattress is 6" thick and it seriously inflates fully right away. Now if you've never seen a 6" mattress before, it is THIN. I was looking at it and thinking oh boy I'm going to need to buy a mattress pad, this thing is pathetic... Until I lay on it and thought woah. This is a very comfortable mattress so don't be alarmed when it inflates and you realize how thin 6" really is. Obviously the springs are felt a little but the layers of foam covering them do a great job and I honestly can say that I was super impressed at how comfortable it was. Of course a 20-minute nap is no judge of a mattress but my mom then stayed with me for a week and I offered her my mattress which is much more expensive and I took this one. No back pain, no trouble sleeping, and I felt comfortable enough to relax on it for hours while I finished a new book. Would I trade in my amazingly comfortable 8-inch memory foam Milliard for this mattress? No. But I sure wish I had bought this mattress back when I was moving into my first apartment instead of that piece-o'-crap IKEA mattress. This is the best mattress I've ever experienced at this price, and can completely recommend this as a full-time mattress for your bedroom or a part-time mattress for your guest bedroom.

I have a Pfaff quilters machine that died and needs parts. It is going to cost about double the cost of this machine to repair it. So I figured what the heck. I've been sewing since grade school in the 1960s and have used all sorts of machines. I also worked at a fabric store for a number of years. I have some advice for the beginner. Various reviews of this machine complain about some problems I thought I'd speak to here.

This is a nice little machine. Initially even I had trouble with it. Discovered that the threading instruction picture in the instruction book is a bit tricky. Don't forget to thread the little bracket that is above the needle. It is step 7 in the book, but not obvious in the picture and not obvious on the machine. The thread first goes through the fairly obvious metal holder in step six, then it needs to go in that little tiny bracket, a small piece of metal that is laying on top of the needle mount. If you don't thread that, the thread will ball up underneath and mess up your sewing and lock up. I suggest stopping at a Joann Fabrics where they sell this machine and ask someone to show you if you can't find it. that's what I ended up doing.

Also for the beginner, Singer machines in particular can also tangle the thread if you don't gently hold the ends at the beginning of a seam. Sometimes, it will pull the thread down into the bobbin area and lock up. This is solved simply by holding the ends for the first couple of stitches. Eventually, after you've had to rip out a few balled up seams, you remember.

I made a heavy vinyl pouch with it as my first project, and it handled the vinyl really well. The feeddogs struggled a bit with the weight of the fabric, pulling it out of line, so I had to put the weight of the fabric on a chair so it didn't pull. Another tip for the beginner, always stop the machine with the needle in the fabric. You do this by stopping and quickly turning the wheel to get that needle back in the fabric.

Another tip here to any new sewer. First take the original needle out of that machine and throw it away. You have no idea what kind of shape it is in. Open the packet of needles that are in the little door in the free arm and use a fresh needle. Sharp needles are critical to any project. And they only stay sharp for a few projects at most.

When you are working with heavy fabric like vinyl or denim, you need to use a heavy duty needle, especially if you are going through four layers of denim. Check them out at the fabric store. Get the type of needle that matches your type of fabric. If you are not sure, ask. And sew through the thick parts very slowly, sometimes you may need to manually insert the needle and pull it up to get through a lot of layers properly to get the machine going. Take your time.

Knits need different needles, sometimes, a ballpoint needle that passes between fibers instead of splitting them as you sew. Fine fabrics also need different needles and they must be very sharp.

Whenever the stitching balls up under your piece, it is likely because the top or bobbin is threaded wrong. Make sure the thread is coming off the bobbin with the loose thread pointing to the left. It can be a bad needle. It can be a tension problem or a bad match between needle and fabric. If the stitches seem really tight, the tension can be turned a half number either way and solve the problem, but only after you have ruled out the other problems. IT happens to the best of us so don't get discouraged. Imagine me going into my old store to have them show me how to thread a machine. : )

Beyond all that, I liked sewing with this machine. it is relatively quiet, and does sew fast. This will be great for doing piecing for quilts. It isn't the quality of my Pfaff, which is all metal (the skin of this machine is plastic) and doesn't have a lot of fancy stitches, but it is a great value for what it does do and does execute well for all I've done so far. And perfect for a beginner sewer, or someone who only needs a machine once in awhile to hem pants or take care of odd little projects or someone like me who was going through withdrawal when her machine dies and is going to take some time to get fixed.

I reckon I have tried around 100 different k-cups and this is my favorite. Initially I refused to pay the higher price for it and continued drinking my former favorite, Timothy's Rainforest Espresso. But when the latter jumped in price, I switched to the Barista and couldn't go back.

Although this coffee is perfect for me (taken with a shot of cream), the rest of the family drinks Wolfgang Puck Coffee, Breakfast in Bed (Medium Roast), 24-Count K-Cups for Keurig Brewers, a milder coffee that is better black.

Check out prices at Green Mountain and ebay. Sometimes (not always) they can beat Amazon but only by a couple of cents per kcup. I got my last order from Green Mountain at $.50 a kcup delivered.
