First, the plus points...* It arrived quickly and in excellent condition. This is the first item of "put-together-yourself" furniture I've ever received that wasn't damaged in some way. 5 stars for this.
* Although it's pressboard and heavy, for it's size it was lighter than I thought it would be at least in relation to other pressboard items I've dealt with. Hanging it on a wall still requires at least 2 people though. 3 people would be better and safer. It is what it is and what it was advertised to be, so 5 stars for this too.
* The hardware bits provided to put the piece together were sturdy. I was impressed that the cam locks were so strong with none of them breaking or bending during installation. Even the plastic dowels were of good quality. Definitely 5 stars for this.
Second, the half and half points...
* The overall look is nice and the cubby sections are pretty large for storing stuff. (More stuff will make it heavier so just be absolutely sure it's secured to the wall safely. This thing will HURT if it falls on someone, maybe even "I need to go to the hospital" kind of hurt.) The laminate over the pressboard is not the best I've ever seen and looks a little off and slightly fake, which it is of course, but I've seen much better out there. I bought the espresso color but I may end up painting mine to make it look nicer. 4 stars for the overall look and storage capacity. 1.5 stars for the look of the laminate.
* It doesn't show in the photo but there is no full back board for behind the cubby sections. There is a section of about 4-5" high that runs the entire length of the shelf that the wall will show through. I suppose it could be useful for putting electrical cords through from the wall to the cubby shelf for items such as a digital photo frame or cell phone charger. If you fill each cubby up you shouldn't be able to see the wall but if you don't you'll have a wall colored strip of space poking out through the dark colored shelf. Or you will have to paint the wall a dark color or place some dark paper or other type of backing in each cubby. Overall, I find this very odd because the contrast doesn't look right. 1 star for the design with a push to 2.5 stars for maybe being useful for cords. (If cord usage was an intended purpose of the design there is no reason the opening had to be so big/high.)
Last, the negative points...
* I've put quite a bit of this type of furniture together and by far this was the MOST frustrating piece I've ever encountered. The directions weren't horrible but none of the pieces were labeled as far as A, B, C, etc... and determining up from down and side to side was tedious. I put it together and took it apart multiple times in order to get it right. 1 or less star for not labeling the components.
* Hanging this item seems to be an afterthought to the design. Yes, instructions are provided but no hardware is included. Basically you are supposed to screw the shelf directly to the wall straight through the back boards. No pilot drill holes are provided, you are just supposed to find your studs behind the wall and secure the shelf to these. However, the really bad part is that each screw you use will show on the visible part of the back board. The designer seemed to take pains to make the shelf look nice with all the cam locks and dowels being hidden and then says to screw right through the laminate with your own screws in order to put it on the wall. I honestly don't know what the designer was thinking here. I didn't like this option so I purchased some metal picture brackets, the really thick, long and overlapping ones, and used these to secure the shelf to my wall. I give 0 stars for the hanging design.
Final thoughts...
This shelf is okay. I probably wouldn't purchase it again or recommend it to anyone who is even slighting mechanically disadvantaged. It requires a lot of patience and some thinking "outside the box" to make it work. I was able to make it work for me so I gave it 3 stars in total. Just be aware of its drawbacks.
